Statute 60
Overview
This statute defines the limits of the duties and disciplinary authority of presbyters, deacons, deaconesses, and subdeacons.
1Among the different ordained clergy, presbyters shall not perform the work of deacons or anything else that does not belong to them.
2Deaconesses shall not bless, nor shall they perform any work done by presbyters and deacons. They shall guard the gates of the church. Apart from this, they have no other work except to assist the presbyters when they baptize women, for this is the work proper to them.
3The deacon shall place the subdeacon, the readers, the singers, and the deaconesses under inhibition. This authority is proper for him when the presbyter is not present.
4It is not proper for subdeacons to place under inhibition the readers, the server of Scripture, or the deaconesses, whether those in orders or the laypeople, because the subdeacons are servants of the deacons.
