Overview
This statute concerns confessors, the honor due to their confession, their possible ordination to ecclesiastical office, and the deposition of one who later denies the faith.
1Statute 56.
2Concerning those who confessed.
3A confessor shall not be ordained. This is something arising from his own will. He is worthy of great honor because he confessed God and made his confession before peoples and kings.
4If he has a calling to this, he shall be ordained a bishop, or he shall be ordained as a presbyter. This ordination likewise is because of his confession.
5If he did not complete his course, but turned back and denied, he shall be deposed, because he not only denied Christ but also became an enemy, like one of the unbelievers.
