Canon 49
Overview
This canon addresses theft from the church, prescribing deposition for clergy and excommunication for laity, with restitution required for silver and clothing.
1Command 49: Concerning one who steals, receives, or takes anything from the church. If a deacon, priest, or layperson steals from the church, or receives stolen goods, let him be excommunicated. If silver or clothing is stolen, let the thief make restitution fivefold. If the stolen items are found, let them not be taken from the owner, but let the thief pay for them, for this is a grievous sin. If he does not pay, let him be excommunicated and punished.
