Abtilis

Canon 28

Overview

This canon forbids clergy from refusing ordination and then accepting it, or from accepting ordination and then fasting or living in a way that contradicts their office, citing the example of Peter and Simon Magus.

1Abṭelis, 28. If a bishop, priest, or deacon refuses ordination and then accepts it, let him be cast out. If he gives a gift, or if he accepts it, just as one gives a gift, let him fast with it and with teaching, and let him not be received. If he dies because of it, let him not be among them, except as one who serves idols. He is cursed, accursed, and anathema, and he shall be cast out and expelled from the church, and his name shall be blotted out, just as I, Peter, blotted out Simon the sorcerer, and I cast him out of the church by the command of the Holy Spirit.
