Statute 58
Overview
This statute requires a bishop to be ordained by two or three bishops and describes the exceptional procedure permitted when violence prevents such an assembly.
1Concerning the requirement that the bishop among you be ordained by bishops. It is proper for a bishop to be ordained by three bishops or by two. If only one bishop lays hands upon him, the newly ordained bishop shall be deposed, as shall the bishop who ordained him.
2An exception applies if only one bishop acted because of the violence of the people, when it was impossible to gather an assembly because of that violence, and not because of pride or unbelief. If this was the case, he shall obtain authorization from many bishops. The arrangement shall be proper for him and shall be made by their command. Neither he nor the bishop who ordained him shall be deposed.
