Statute 27
Overview
This statute gives procedures for appointing readers, virgins, and subdeacons, and for recognizing claims to gifts of healing and prophecy.
1Statute 27: Concerning the reader, the virgins, the subdeacons, and the grace of healing.
2To a reader who is ordained, the bishop shall give the Scripture, but shall not lay hands on him.
3He shall not lay hands on a virgin either, for she became a virgin through her heart alone.
4As for the subdeacons, he shall not lay hands on a subdeacon, but shall make mention of the name over them so that they may minister to the deacons.
5As for the grace of healing, if someone says, “I have acquired the grace of healing and prophecy,” they shall not lay hands on him until his deed makes it evident that he is trustworthy.
