Canon 53
Overview
This canon forbids clergy from engaging in trade or allowing others to do so on their behalf, prescribing deposition for violation.
1Command 53: Let a bishop, priest, or deacon not engage in trade or permit it to be done by others, so that the office of a person may be found, and the priesthood may be found. For it is written: 'Render to God the things that are God's, and to the king the things that are the king's.' If a king or ruler is found to be unjust, let him be punished. If a priest is found to be unjust, let him be deposed. If a layperson is found to be unjust, let him be excommunicated.
