Canon 34

Overview

This canon clarifies that eating and drinking are not inherently sinful, as all creation is good, but condemns those who abstain due to false asceticism or heretical teaching.

1Command 34: Concerning those who abstain from food. If a bishop, priest, deacon, or any of the clergy abstains from eating meat, drinking wine, or anything else, not because of a vow but as if these things were unclean, let them be deposed, as the Scripture says that all things are good and God created man male and female. In this manner, they shall be excommunicated. If they do not, they shall be deposed and cast out of the church. The same applies to laypeople.
