Chapter 37

Overview

A prayer of praise to God, joining the worship of the angels and all creation with thanksgiving for God’s power, wisdom, righteousness, and mercy.

1All the spiritual hosts of angels are a flame of fire, and the holy cherubim with six wings glorify you with a loud voice. They sing with a voice that is never silent, saying, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord of Hosts! The holiness of your glory [is perfect and] fills the heavens and the earth.” The whole company of these angels—the thrones and authorities, dominions and principalities, powers, cherubim, and seraphim—cry out and say, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, and blessed be this Church of the nations, which is like the host of heaven.” Day and night, with a holy soul and a perfect heart, they sing in this way and say, “The chariot of God is ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands upon thousands of those who glorify the Lord on the holy mountain of Sinai.”

2The heavens and everything in them humbly thank you, for you have hung the heavens like a vault, laid the foundations of the earth, and established it upon the waters. You separated darkness from light, numbered the stars in their fullness, and called them all by name. The whole creation declares your greatness, and you also made the trees of the field grow. Therefore, the whole creation of humankind must offer you glory and thanksgiving, sacrifice, offering, and incense through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, your only-begotten Son. You alone are almighty, good, merciful, and beneficent, for yours are the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

3You are in heaven, on earth, and in the sea. You have gathered the whole creation from the ends of the earth, and there is no end to your greatness. For it is not we who have said this, but you said, “I am the Lord God who am above the heavens, and I am present in every place; besides me there is no other god.” Your word is true, and there is none like you, the holy God, the Lord of the saints. The souls of all are in your hand.

4You are worthy of glory and exaltation. Your throne is unchangeable, your strength does not decay, no one can declare your greatness, and the excellence of your beauty is marvelous. No one dares to draw near to your dwelling, and the knowledge of your wisdom is beyond number. Your righteousness has no end. You need no one to counsel you and seek no one to help you. You have neither beginning nor end. Your kingdom does not pass away, no one can overcome your power, and the hosts of angels who minister to you are innumerable.

5You are the Father of wisdom, the maker of the whole creation, and the framer of the law. You destroy the ungodly and reward the righteous. You are God, the Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Lord of those who humbly thank him, in whom there is no falsehood. You take no bribe in judgment, and your praises are innumerable. To you belong the honor, glory, and worship that every rational soul offers to you forever and ever. Amen.
