Abtilis

Canon 76

Overview

This canon prohibits the ordination of a former pagan who was baptized but continued in evil practices after baptism, unless he has demonstrated a genuine change of life and wisdom.

1Abṭelis, 86. If a man is a pagan who has been baptized and is a man of evil, and his evil deeds were known before him, and he has not been cleansed from his evil deeds after baptism, he shall not be ordained a bishop, nor a presbyter, nor a deacon, nor one who resembles them in the first rank. For he is not a teacher, because he has not been taught. But if he is a teacher by the gift of God, and his deeds are known to be good and distinguished, and he stands in this, let him be ordained a bishop and a priest.
