Canon 63
Overview
This canon addresses the case of a man who deceives a virgin, either by promising marriage and then abandoning her, or by seducing her, prescribing expulsion from the church, with a note on the consistency of this rule in both old and new law.
1Abṭelis, 63. If a man deceives a virgin, whether he does not marry her, or he promises her to another, and she is not his, and he deceives her for his own soul, and if he is the one who did this by her consent and she has lost her virginity, let him be expelled from the church. But if she was deceived and he did not marry her, except that he loved her for himself, and if he is a widower, let them be bound by this, by the first law and by the new law, both of them.
