Abtilis

Canon 49

Overview

This canon addresses clergy who eat in taverns or drink wine in the houses of the wicked, prescribing deposition or exclusion from communion depending on their status and repentance.

1Abṭelis, 49. If a man from among the priests eats food in taverns or drinks wine in the house of the wicked, let him be deposed if he has no good works. If he is a layman and eats in the house of a merchant or drinks wine there, let him be excluded from communion with those who are without good works. If he is a merchant and eats in the house of a merchant or drinks wine there, let him be excluded from the one who does not eat, and let him have no share in his house. If he does not remain in his house, let him be excluded. And whoever does this, as we have previously spoken, let him be excluded from his name.
