Abtilis

Canon 14

Overview

This canon forbids a presbyter, deacon, or any other clergy from leaving their assigned place and church without the bishop's command; if they do so, they are to be deposed, stripped of their honor, and excluded from the clergy, remaining only as a layperson among the faithful. If they refuse to return when summoned, they are to be expelled from the clergy and the assembly, and their property is to be treated as that of the faithful.

1Abṭelis, 14. If a presbyter, deacon, or any other clergyman leaves his place and the church where he was appointed by the bishop, archbishop, or patriarch, without the command of his superior, let him be deposed, stripped of his honor, and excluded from the clergy, remaining only as a layperson among the faithful. If he refuses to return when summoned by the bishop to his place, and does not obey, let him be expelled from the clergy and from their assembly, and let his property be treated as that of the faithful, for he has violated the order of the priesthood and become like the people.
