Statute 69

1Concerning the times of prayer: When you rise at daybreak, pray. Pray at the third hour, at the sixth hour, and at the ninth hour. Pray in the evening, at bedtime, at midnight, and at cockcrow.

2At daybreak, let us give thanks because God causes the light to shine upon us, has turned the night away from us, and has brought the day.

3At the third hour, let us give thanks because at that hour Pilate handed over our Lord. At the sixth hour, our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. At the ninth hour, he gave up his spirit, and the world was disturbed; and when they pierced his side, blood and water came out from him. When they crucified our Lord, all creation was afraid and trembled before him because of what the impious Jews had done, and creation could not look upon the mocking of the Lord.

4In the evening, let us give thanks because he has given us rest at night from the day’s labor. At cockcrow, let us give thanks because at that hour the cock announces the coming of the day, when the work of the day is to be done.
