Statute 42

Overview

This statute regulates fasting during Pascha, addresses pregnant and sick persons and those unable to complete the two-day fast, and gives directions for compensatory fasting when the proper day has been missed.

1Statute 42 — Concerning how it is not fitting for anyone to eat during the fasts of Pascha (Fasika), except at the proper time for eating.

2For the following persons the fast shall not be reckoned: the pregnant and the sick.

3Those who cannot fast for the two days shall fast on the sabbath, for then it is necessary that they fast on bread and water.

4If someone is aboard a ship, or if through some mishap someone has mistaken the day, then, once he becomes aware of it, he shall fast in compensation after Pentecost. What he keeps is not the Pascha, but a likeness of it after the Pascha has passed. Therefore he shall not omit fasting in the second month; and when he has returned from his journey, he shall do so with certain knowledge.
