Overview
This statute directs silence while the bishop speaks and specifies who may distribute blessed bread at a meal when the bishop or other clergy are absent.
1Statute 38.
2When the bishop speaks, everyone shall be silent. If the bishop is not present, they shall receive the bread of blessing from the presbyter or the deacon.
3When the bishop speaks, all shall be silent, and no one shall answer another with so much as a word, for the bishop shall question them.
4If the bishop is not present at the meal and only the faithful are there, they shall receive the Eulogia from the presbyter’s hand, if a presbyter is present. If no presbyter is present, they shall receive it from the deacon’s hand. The catechumens shall also receive their portion of the mystic bread.
5If only laypeople are present, they shall eat quietly. It is not proper for laypeople to make the Eulogia.
