Statute 36

Overview

This statute gives fasting instructions for widows, virgins, clergy, the people, and the bishop, and distinguishes blessed bread from the Eucharistic offering.

1Statute 36. Concerning widows and virgins, and the times when the bishop should fast.

2They shall act as we have often said. Widows and virgins shall fast and pray in the church. Presbyters and deacons shall fast whenever they wish, and the people shall likewise fast.

3The bishop ought not to fast except when all the people fast. For if they bring into the church what is proper to bring, no one can be refused. The man, after breaking his own bread, shall taste and eat with the other believers who are with him. Before they partake, they shall receive from the bishop’s hand a piece of the bread that has been distributed.

4It is Eulogia: everyone shall receive the bread that has been offered. This is bread of blessing and not the offering as the body of our Lord Christ.
