Overview
This statute sets conditions for appointing widows and explains why they are designated by word rather than by the laying on of hands.
1Statute 26: Concerning the ordination of widows.
2If a widow is ordained, she shall not be sealed but shall be designated by name. If her husband died a long time ago, she shall be ordained. If her husband died recently, she shall not be trusted. Even if she is elderly, she shall be tested for many days, because lust will contend with those who are ordained to a place.
3The widow shall be ordained by word alone and shall then be joined to the other widows. They shall not lay hands on her, because she does not offer the sacrifice and does not have a sacred ministry. Sealing is for the priests because of their ministry, but the duty of widows concerns prayer, which is the duty of all.
