Statute 23

Overview

This statute gives the procedure and prayer for the ordination of a presbyter, followed by the people’s response.

1Concerning the ordination of presbyters.

2If the bishop wishes to ordain a presbyter, he shall lay his hand upon the presbyter’s head. All the presbyters shall touch him and pray over him.

3The bishop shall pray in the form stated previously, saying: “My God, Father of our Lord and our Savior Jesus Christ, look down upon this servant of yours. Impart to him the spirit of grace and the gift of holiness, so that he may be able to direct your people with a pure heart.

4As you looked upon your chosen people and commanded Moses to choose presbyters whom you filled with the Holy Spirit that you granted to your servant and minister Moses, so now, Lord, give this servant of yours the grace that does not fail. Preserve for us the spirit of your favor, and grant that, as you fill our hearts with your worship, we may glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ, through whom be glory and power to you—to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—in the holy Church, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.”

5All the people shall say: “Amen and amen. He is worthy of it.”
