Statute 2
Overview
John speaks about accountability and impartial correction, then describes the separate places of life and death and gives the commandments to love God and one’s companion.
1John said: “Brothers, we know that we shall be examined concerning everything entrusted to us. Therefore, we must not show partiality to anyone who is with us. If there is someone with him who says what is improper, that person shall be reproved, because what he says is not good.”
2Then they had John speak first. John said: “There are two distinct places, one for life and one for death, and there is a separation between these two places. The place of life is this: you shall love the Lord your God and your Creator with all your heart, and you shall praise him because he saved you from death. This is the first commandment. The second is this: you shall love your companion as yourself. In this are the whole Law and the Prophets, my beloved.”
