Statute 15

Overview

James gives moral, practical, and liturgical qualifications for the ordination of a reader.

1Concerning the ordination of a reader [anaguenestis].

2James said that a reader shall be ordained only after he has first been examined. He shall not be a man of many words, a drunkard, or a scoffer. He shall be of good character and a lover of what is good. He shall be quick to go to the church every day and remember the judgment there.

3He shall be obedient, shall read well, and shall know the proper role of a reader, so that he may act according to what he reads. Should not one who fills the ears of others with his word do it himself? Will it not be recorded against him as a sin before God?
