Chapter 22: The Slaughter of the Infants

Protoevangelium of James · Chapter 22 of 29 · 3 passages

1When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became angry. He sent out his killers, telling them to kill all the infants two years old and younger.

2And when Mary heard that the infants were being killed, she was afraid. She took her child, wrapped him in cloths, and put him in a manger for cows.

3And when Elizabeth heard that John was being sought, she took him up into the hills and looked around for somewhere to hide him, but there was no hiding place. Then Elizabeth groaned and said, “Mountain of God, take in a mother with her child,” because Elizabeth was unable to go any higher. And immediately, the mountain split open and took her in, and a light shone through the mountain for her. For an angel of the Lord was with them, protecting them.
