Canon 37
Overview
This canon distinguishes between legitimate fasting for health or travel reasons and illicit abstinence, prescribing penalties for clergy who scandalize the people or are physically unfit for ministry.
1Command 37: If a priest is found eating within the church and drinking, let it be known that this is not the case if he is in a place of business, due to a journey, or in a lodging. If a bishop is found doing this, let him be deposed, for he says to the people, 'Do not despise the word.' If a priest, deacon, or subdeacon is found doing this, let them be expelled. If a priest is lame, blind, or has a defect in his hand, let him be expelled. The same applies to a layperson who does this.
