Chapter 40

Overview

A prayer over the baptismal water, followed by directions to baptize in the triune name and anoint the baptized person with balsam oil.

1Almighty Father of your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, I thank you because you sent your only-begotten Son, and he saved the whole world. He hears all who make supplication to him and proclaims the kingdom of heaven, the remission of sins, and the resurrection of the dead.

2I glorify you, thank you, and praise you because you patiently endured the sufferings of death on the cross for all and gave us baptism, which is the new birth. I glorify you, O God the Father, the only God, in the name of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, because you, the worker of all wonders, did not reject humanity. You created Adam and placed him in the garden. When he transgressed your commandment, you put him out of the garden by your righteous judgment; but in your abundant mercy you did not cast him off. In the latter days, you sent your Son to become human and to endure suffering without sin.

3I pray and entreat you: look down from heaven upon this water and sanctify it by your power, so that all who are baptized in it according to Christ’s command may become partakers with him in his crucifixion, death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven. Save them from the death of sin, so that they may live in righteousness.

4After this, let him baptize into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Let him anoint with balsam oil and say:
