Abtilis

Canon 77

Overview

This canon warns bishops against engaging in secular affairs or military service, stating that one cannot serve two masters and that such actions lead to the loss of spiritual office.

1Abṭelis, 87. Just as it is not permitted for a bishop to bow his head from the freedom of Christ and to profane his spiritual office, so he shall not be ordained nor numbered among the ranks of the nobles, except that he is within the church and his office is not diminished nor diminished. But if he is deeply involved in the affairs of the nobles and in the freedom of the earth, and he abandons the freedom of the heavenly King, he is removed from his office. For as our Lord says: 'No one can serve two masters,' and if one commands one and abandons the other.
